On hiatus – Check out my Instagram

Hi all! As evidenced by the fact that it’s been 6 weeks since my last post (yikes!), I’ve been super busy. I’m still painting my nails and such, but I haven’t had the time to post pictures here at Daily Something.

However, I do still share my nails quite a bit on my Instagram account. So feel free to join me over there. Thanks! I hope to be back to posting here soon. :)

SquareHue Rio Box WINNER!

Hi all! Just popping in to announce the winner of the SquareHue Rio box! The winner is…

Tara Nixon Cox

Congrats, Tara! I’ll be emailing you about claiming your prize. :)

Your cat wants you to paint your nails

So this Instagram photo happened nearly two years ago, but it happened before this blog so I wanted to share.

I was reorganizing my nail polish racks and had a bunch of polishes laying on the bed. I turned around to pick up a few more to place in the racks and saw this. It completely froze me in my tracks. I was honestly sort of freaked out! This is NOT photoshopped (well, except to add the dailysomething.com)…

I think Mannie wanted me to paint my nails that color. (Yes, I bought my cat his own .com. Someday, he’ll probably start blogging LOL!)

Growing Out Your Nail Beds & Things I’ve Learned in the Past Year

For all my life, I’ve had very short and small nail beds. In other words, the point on my nail where the pink turns to white is rather low. It’s always sort of bugged me. I used to bite and tear my nails. Ouch! Just thinking about it makes me cringe. But in 2008 I got Invisalign (clear trays to straighten teeth) and I was unable to bite my nails. This was an awakening to taking care of my nails. Although I was growing my nails out a bit longer than before, my nail beds remained the same because I still cut them very short with nail clippers.

Image on left is from 2011 & shows how short my nails were.

And then this blog happened. :)

I know that nail bed shape and length is 99% genetics, but I also think because I was taking better care of my nails, my nail beds almost seemed to “heal” and they have changed. You know the area at the free edge of your nail bed that’s usually curved—the “smile” when it comes to French manicures? Mine was never curved. It was more straight across. But over the course of this year, the pink area of my nails has pulled out a bit and I now have that smile line on most of my nails.

Image on right is a picture of Nicole by OPI’s Hard Kourt Fashionista taken more recently. Click on image to see larger.

I’m not a professional when it comes to this, but I think really what’s happening is that the skin under the nails has pulled out while my nails grow. And because I’m only gently filing my nails instead of trimming them with nail clippers, and I only use a nail brush to clean under my nails, the skin remains and my nail bed appears to “grow”.

Again, I’m not a professional. LOL!

Anyhow, so I wanted to share with you guys what I’ve been doing specifically…

  • Consistently moisturizing of my hands, including oil on my cuticles (at least once a day)
  • Not clipping my nails all the way down to “stubs” if possible
  • Only using a gentle nail file to shape my nails
  • Keeping nails at a shorter length to prevent breakage
  • Conservative buffing when I see an area starting to peel (look for buffers labeled “Smooth”, do not use the ones that add shine)
  • Using a nail brush to clean under my nails. I have a brush at nearly every sink in my house, and travel with one when going out of town.
  • Keeping nails painted so that I am less likely to see anything under the nails and trying to clean it out when a nail brush is not available

I’ve also noticed that my cuticles look much better and my nails are stronger than ever before. I really think when you start to really care for your nails, things can only improve.

So that’s what I’ve learned over the past year. You take care of your nails and they look better. Funny, right? ;)

Long time no blog

Hi all! It’s been a really long time since I last posted here. Definitely not “daily.” ;)

Back in December my nails were probably the longest they have ever been! What’s the perfect manicure for long nails? A French manicure of course… :)

Unfortunately I had a run-in with a really bad manicurist at the Salt Lake City Airport just a few days later. :( The poor girl really had no idea what she was doing. Filing down my nails (No! Stop!), and trying to cover ever bit of nail with polish (Hint: theres a reason why good manicurists leave a little bit of nail near the cuticle unpolished).

Mental note: Never get another airport manicure. Its just not worth it.

Image below is shown small because any larger would scare small children. No, really. Sadly, I did pay for this manicure. I didn’t realize how bad it was until I got back to my gate to wait for my flight…

After she totally messed up my nails, I ended up trimming them down so I could grow them out. They were pretty stained anyway.

And now I’m just growing them out again. :)

Randomness

Currently rocking A-England Avalon. Can’t get enough of that color. So pretty!

I’ve been super busy, as you can tell by the lack of posts here. :) I did have a failed attempt at a water marbling manicure, though. After a few fingers I gave up. It was much MUCH too messy (even with tape around my cuticles). Maybe one of these days I’ll try it again?

In the meantime, I’ve been loving things I see online…

Over at YouTube, MissJenFABULOUS shared this awesome braided manicure… (you can also see it at her blog HERE)…

And I’m in love with this manicure by Pshiiit. I have Essie Mint Candy Apple so I’m sorely tempted to recreate the look myself. :)

What are you admiring online recently?

Favorite places to order nail polish online

Hello all! I’m still sporting my Black Rainbow Stripes nails from a couple days ago, but it’s coming off tonight. Until then, I thought I would share with you some of my favorite places to order nail polish online. :)

transdesign.com

Great prices on China Glaze, Essie, and Color Club. Plus, they ship super fast. I love that for newer collections you can pick up the entire collection (plus store display!) for us nail polish junkies. It makes purchasing all the polishes in a collection fast and easy. I’ve ordered from them numerous times and have never had any issues. I believe they are located on the East Coast and even with the far distance (I’m in Utah), all polishes arrive safely.

nailpolishcanada.com

I’ve only ordered from them once (when I ordered some Nfu Oh polishes), but it was a pleasant experience. Super fast shipping. Only one week from when I ordered to when I received it, and that included four days when it was held up at customs at the border. All polishes arrived safely. Great option for all of you in Canada. :)

zoya.com

You can find Zoya polishes locally at some Ulta Beauty stores, but I still prefer to purchase straight from Zoya because of the color selection. My Ulta only stocks current and brand new collections, and they usually receive them a few weeks after Zoya is selling them at their site. Oh, I’m too impatient. I’d rather order from Zoya (who includes freebies like travel size Remove+ bottles and other goodies). All polishes arrive safely as well.

amazon.com

For harder to find collections from years past or for nail stamping items, I usually turn to Amazon. I have to order from third-party sellers (so I don’t get my Amazon Prime shipping discount), but it’s still worth it. Usually, I’ll find the specific polish or polishes I want and then go to that third-party’s storefront page at Amazon to see if there is anything else I want to buy. That way, I get the most bang for my buck when it comes to shipping costs. Amazon is also the best place to order Bundle Monster image plates (although you can order from bundlemonster.com, too).

beauty.com

I had a little issue with them a while back (their backorder process is ridiculous), but they do have a wide range of polish brands. They also share a shopping cart with drugstore.com so if you’re picking up some allergy meds (oh, my itchy eyes!), you can throw in a couple polishes as well. :)

sephora.com

Sephora only carries a few nail polish specific brands (Sephora by OPI, Nails Inc, etc), but what they carry is good quality. I also love that I can pick up other beauty items at the same time. :)

Now it’s your turn! Where do you buy nail polish online?
